杀破狼 Sha Po Lang/ Stars of Chaos by Priest

Synopsis

In the age of the Great Liang Dynasty, the lives of the people were made convenient with steam-powered machines that run on a fuel named Ziliujin. Chang Geng, who lived in a small countryside village, shared a distant relationship with his mother while his stepfather was away most of the year round, and the only people he was close to were two little kids, the village teacher, and his Yifu.

But his life was flipped upside down one day following the barbaric Man tribes’ invasion, and it turned out that his entire identity had been an illusion – not only was Chang Geng himself not the country boy he thought he was, but also his mother, his teacher, and even his beloved Yifu

Review

Sorry everyone, I’ve been busy with exams past month and I’ve been reading Sha Po Lang in between when I have time. Seven Seas just announced official translation, so yay!!!! (Yes, they will keep it as Yifu)

“Your subject Gu Yun, late to the rescue.”  This line is ICONIC!

While I only read two other novels, SPL is currently my favourite of her works. It’s spectacularly written, the worldbuiling, politics and war strategies just blew my mind. It’s historical steampunk novel and one of the bsst I’ve ever read. If you love plot driven stories about two men in their twenties who fell in love while battling their inner demons in the middle of war, then this is for you.

Gu Yun and Chang Geng!!! I love them so so much!!!! I love they both have a million other names and they use that at different situations as they each denote a different meaning.

Gu Yun is our half deaf-blind, badass monocle wearing Marquis of Order, who instills fear in the enemy just by his name. He is also unexpectedly hilarious, self centered, very smart and overall my new favourite character. Chang Geng is so brilliant and watching him scheme and take them all down with just his mind? *Chefs kiss*
Also they are both archers!!! (Yes, I have a thing for sexy brains and archery, and ChangGu has both)

This is a slowburn and it takes a long time for them to get together and it’s so good!!! This book is mainly plot with around 25% romance. But their love makes me swoon, Chang Geng reformed a whole country to keep Gu Yun safe!!!!!!

Xiao Chang Geng, who would act spoiled, was pitiful and endearing — but Yan Wang, who sketched and designed the nation, was the one that moved his heart.

As for the side characters, they are well fleshed out, especially Gu Yun’s best friend Shen Yi. I love their interactions. We also have a monk, Liao Ran, who is mute. It’s was amazing to see most side characters proficient in sign language.

“My general, some people are predestined by fate. With only one glance, you will never be able to escape.”

The extras!!! Each one made me so happy, most of it is fluff and ChangGu living in domestic bliss. Basically just read this masterpiece!!

“Look after your husband carefully, tell him to stay obediently down there. Don’t come and disturb my man.” ~ Gu Yun

It also has 3 seasons of audio drama and the voice actors are brilliant!! Official site here. It’s available with Eng sub on Youtube.

Live Action

There’s also the upcoming live action adaptation called Feng Huo Liu Jin.

While there is no news on a release date, hopefully we’ll be able to watch it soon!!!
