The Quiet House by Lily Morton
Blank and Blue, Book 2
Levi Black has mostly recovered from the events of a year ago. The only lingering effects are that he’s much more well known in York than he’d like to be, and he’s a lot more cautious about walking around his house naked. However, those events brought him the capricious and fascinating Blue, so he’s not complaining. On the contrary, he’s happy, in love, and looking forward to Blue finally moving in with him. And if sometimes he wonders what Blue sees in a boring cartoonist, he keeps that to himself.
Blue Billings is finally ready to throw off the memories of his past and move in with the person who means the most in the world to him. His psychic abilities have grown in the last year to his mentor Tom’s consternation, but Blue is determined to look on the bright side. He’s also focused on ignoring all the warning signs that he’s received lately.
However, even deeply buried secrets have a way of rising to the surface. And when a surprise from Blue’s past turns up and draws them away to a lonely house on the Yorkshire moors, Levi and Blue must fight for their survival once again.
From bestselling author, Lily Morton, comes the second book in the Black and Blue series. The books should be read in order.
“I told you yesterday that opening yourself up to ghosts can be dangerous. You have to keep part of yourself back.”
“Oh, really? Then the nose bleed yesterday was unconnected?”
We’d gone to see a friend of his—a lady who claimed her house was being haunted and wanted Tom to look at it. I’d gone along with him and had been greeted by a very irate shopkeeper from the Tudor era. His litany of complaints about his customers had been brought to an abrupt stop when my nose had gushed more blood than a severed limb. Therefore, I’d probably made the situation worse for Tom’s friend, and we’ll end up at her house again. Perhaps I should invest in spectral earplugs…
I become aware that Tom is frowning at me.
“Oh, totally,” I say quickly. “I get nosebleeds occasionally. No big deal. Nothing to do with spirits.”
I’m lying through my arse. I’ve had nosebleeds occasionally over the years, but they’ve become worse this year, along with the headaches that have always accompanied them. Ironically, these physical side effects have increased at the same time that my psychic ability has improved, and I feel more in control of myself than I ever have.
But I’m not going to discuss it, because it’s Tom’s latest favourite topic.
I smile winsomely at him. “Let’s go back to discussing my feelings. Maybe I can braid your beard at the same time, Tom.”
“Blue.” His tone is suddenly severe, and I look up at him, paying attention automatically. “You’ve grown such a lot in this last year. You’re powerful, lad. Far more powerful than I ever was, and you’re only at the beginning.”
I feel a warm glow inside me. “Isn’t that a good thing?”
He hesitates. “I’m not sure.”
I’m stung. “Why?”
“Because you’re impulsive too,” he says harshly. “You open yourself far too much to the spirits. They sense it, and they flock to you. You have to learn to be cautious. You have to develop self-preservation and not get so involved, because when you’re involved, you become impetuous, and that way lies disaster. I’ve seen it firsthand, and I don’t want it to happen to you.”
“What sort of disaster?”
Levi and Blue are back with another adventure!! This is the second book in the Black and Blue series and cannot be read as a standalone.
I was in the mood for some ghosts and this fulfilled that so well! I love it when there’s same coulple throughout series as it’s really good to to see them grow as a couple and find out new things about each other as time goes on.
We get a bit more of Blue’s past, some interesting new characters and a spooky and quiet mansion. The book delivers on the creepy feelings quite well. Definitely pick it up at night for maximum anxiety inducing feels!(Unless you don’t want that😏)
Yes, it’s a Lily Morton book, so of course there’s snark and banter! Tom’s witty humour and Blue with his sarcastic comments made it really fun.
I hope the next book is Will and Jem because I already love them!
